Teddy Shalon
Teddy worked as an entrepreneur, executive, and investor focusing on multidisciplinary technology based ventures since 1980. At the age of 22, Teddy started his first company, which developed surgical devices. He then moved on to medical informatics and founded Ivy Technologies, serving as its President and CTO. Following the acquisition of Ivy by Nestlé, he co-founded a life science incubator, Metaphase, where he oversaw all technical and clinical developments. He later became a cofounding Chairman of Synteni, a developer of microarrays for measuring gene expression. More recently, Teddy founded ThinOptics Waterpods, Airxpanders, Osteogenix and BioPolymerix . Teddy holds an MS in Computer Science, a BA in Physics, and a BS in Electrical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis.

At the age of 29, Dari became the cofounder, President, and CEO of Synteni, a company established to commercialize the DNA chip technology he developed at Stanford University. With his leadership, the company became a major player in the global genomics industry, resulting in the 1999 acquisition of Synteni by Incyte Genomics (NASDAQ: INCY). After successfully integrating Synteni into Incyte, Dari became the Founder and Director of the Center for Genomics Research at Harvard University. The new multidisciplinary center integrated research from the departments of biology, chemistry, physics, engineering and computer science at Harvard to advance the understanding of complex biological systems. Dari holds a PhD in Biotechnology Engineering from Stanford University and a BS and MS in Engineering and an MBA from MIT.

Sam has been involved in the commercialization of technology since 1991. As an academic polymer scientist since 1980, he partnered with Teddy Shalon to create and run BioPolymerix, a company founded to develop new ophthalmic technologies. Since BioPolymerix, Sam has been a cofounder in six other companies (Surfacine Development Company, Intelligent Biocides, Synteni, Neosil, AirXpanders, Osteogenix) devoted to medical and pharmaceutical technologies. Sam is the primary inventor on a number of patents in the life sciences arena and has been actively involved in creating robust intellectual property estates for companies that he has worked with. Sam has a PhD in Polymer Science and is an active faculty member at the University of Massachusetts.

At Sierra Ventures, he contributed to investment opportunities in enterprise software, Internet advertising, and medical devices. Ajit leads our team as CEO of Renew Medical. Ajit holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, an MS in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and a joint PhD in Bioengineering from the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and the College of Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley.

Barry Cheskin is a seasoned medical device executive who began his career in the medical device industry as a senior engineer at C.R. Bard. Currently, he is the President & CEO and Co-Founder of PowerVision. Prior to that, he was President and CEO of NanoGram Devices Corp., a nanotechnology-based medical device company. Previously, he was the President and CEO of RITA Medical Systems, Inc., a minimally invasive cancer device company. He was also a Division President at another medical device company, Datascope Corp., where he launched the VasoSeal vascular puncture sealing product. Barry has served as a Senior Associate in the management consulting firm of Booz, Allen & Hamilton. Barry holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from MIT, an MS in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University, and an MBA from Columbia Business School. Barry currently serves as Chairman of the Board of AirXpanders, one of its portfolio companies, where he was also a Co-Founder.
